4 markets in London you shouldn’t miss!
Whether it’s food, clothing, antiques, art or a whole mixture, Londoners love a good market. And we think London does markets pretty well. In fact, if you want to get a flavour of London’s creativity and energy, no visit here is complete without a trip to a market. So, here’s a shortlist of our favourites.
Get inspired at Borough Market
Let’s start south of the river, with one of London’s most famous markets. Because, especially if you’re a foodie, then a trip to Borough Market is a real must. Here you’ll find not only delicacies and artisan produce from the UK, but also specialties from around the world. The range is matched only by the quality. So, whether you want a feast for the eyes, or a tasty treat, there’s something here for you.
The market is open Monday to Saturday. However, the main days are Wednesdays – Saturdays. So, we recommend visiting towards the end of the week.
Sample street food at Flat Iron Square
Not far away from Borough Market is Flat Iron Square. But here you’ll find a totally contrasting style. Featuring tempting street food from around the world, Flat Iron Square has a buzzing vibe, with food stalls, bars and a music venue. Also, on Friday evenings there’s a DJ or live jazz and poetry. So, you can kick back, chill out and soak up some London cool and culture.
Open every day, generally from midday till late evening, but check the website for specific days.
Dip into Columbia Road market
On Sundays, one of east London’s most popular markets takes place – Columbia Road flower market. And when we say popular, we mean, really popular. So, get there early to avoid the crowds! Here you’ll find a wealth of flowers and plants, with classic London stall traders calling out to passers by.
Afterwards, browse the boutiques along Columbia Road. In fact, the shops hidden behind the flower market are just as appealing, with irresistible art, design, jewellery and homeware items. Or seek out one of the cafes for a well-deserved break!
Head to Liverpool Street tube or Shoreditch Overground for this market. The opening times are Sundays, 8:00 – 15:00.
Shop for style at Old Spitalfields Market
Also, near Liverpool Street and Shoreditch stations you’ll find Old Spitalfields Market. Between hip Shoreditch and the City, this market boasts a range of boutiques selling ultra-stylish fashion and perfume. So, if you want to browse for some British or international cool, be sure to head over here.
But it’s not just fashion. The market also hosts stalls which sell jewellery, art and homewares, as well as food and coffee stalls and pop-up events. And on Thursdays there’s a curated Antiques Market, packed with vintage delights.
Opening times are from 10 am. However, closing time for the shops and the market stalls varies, so check the website for specific information.
